About Kai

Who it is for

Kai is a store for a specialist tea seller, particularly one importing single-garden matcha, sencha and hojicha along with teaware. It leans on provenance and process, since buyers of specialty tea want to know where it grew and how to prepare it.

How the pages are laid out

The home page opens with a quiet line about a slowly made cup, then 'Fresh from the gardens', six routes into Japanese tea, and promises such as single garden, sealed in Kyoto and free delivery over $60. A subscription cadence of every 4 or 8 weeks is shown, followed by journal posts and a 'Letters from the garden' signup. The collection page, called 'The tea shelf', filters by tea type such as matcha. The About page runs through three generations on one hillside, wabi-sabi and how the teas are chosen. Product, bag, search and Journal pages complete it.

Design notes

Spare and calm. Shippori Mincho, a Japanese-style serif, gives headings an unhurried look, Noto Sans keeps descriptions neutral, and an olive green accent echoes tea leaves. Pages use a lot of empty space and small type, so a few product photos can do the talking.

Good to know

Kai is built on Shopify Online Store 2.0, with cart drawer, filtering and swatches among its features. Shopify is an Instant download; WordPress and Next.js are separate $9 purchases, made to order. Origins, garden names and delivery thresholds in the demo are sample text.
